Hello everyone and welcome to this French Open quarter-final live blog, where we will be bringing you all the latest news and updates ahead of the titanic clash between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic defeated Diego Schwartzman on Sunday to make the quarter-final stage at Roland Garros for the 16th time in his career, while Nadal was forced to come from behind against Felix Auger-Aliassime in a match that lasted four hours and 21 minutes.
Djokovic, who is the defending champion, is now unbeaten on Parisian soil in 11 matches and comes up against the King of Clay in Nadal without dropping a set so far.
Not only does Djokovic have his Roland Garros crown on the line, if he is beaten by Nadal, then he could lose his No.1 ranking. But that will only happen if Medvedev reaches the final, or if Zverev is crowned champion in Paris.
Nadal for his part hinted that should he lose to Djokovic, it might well be his last ever game at the French Open after having been plagued by a foot injury since 2021.
“I haven’t played Djokovic for a year and it’s a big challenge,” Nadal said before the quarter-final.
“He’s won the last nine matches, he’s the Rome champion and he’ll be confident.
“I know my situation and I accept it. What I’m going to do is fight, I can’t complain because I’m in the quarter-finals.
“Two and a half weeks ago, even though I had hopes, I didn’t know if I was going to be here – and I’m enjoying the quarters. Every match could be my last at Roland Garros.”
Nadal is the current Australian Open champion and has won the French Open title at Roland Garros a record 13 times, and only two players have ever beaten Nadal at Roland Garros, those being Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic.
